Together with the other seven scientific academies in Germany, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities supports the research ventures subsumed in the Academies' Programme. This programme has been funded since 1979/80 by both the German Federal Government and the individual federal states to promote long-term research projects in the humanities and natural sciences. The programme is coordinated by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and is one of the biggest and most important research programmes in the humanities in the Federal Republic of Germany. At present (2009), it comprises a total of 157 projects with 202 working groups. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities is closely involved in this programme, with 23 projects with 26 working groups in Bavaria, in four other federal states and in Switzerland.
