The eight academies of sciences and humanities (the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy, the Göttingen Academy, the Bavarian Academy, the Saxonian Academy, the Heidelberg Academy, the Mainz Academy, the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy, and the Hamburg Academy) are associated in the Union of german Academies of Sciences and Humanities. This Union, whose executive board and scientific committee meet regularly, is in charge of joint research activities and coordinates the programmes and the planning of the individual academies, in particular the Academies' Programme. It promotes communication between the academies, arranges press and public relations, and organises meetings to discuss current scientific questions. The Union represents the academies abroad and sends delegates to national and international scientific organisations, such as the Union Académique Internationale, the European Science Foundation, and the association All European Academies Association (ALLEA).
