Commission for the Publication of German Inscriptions of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period – Munich section

The Commission is part of the interacademic project Die Deutschen Inschriften (German Inscriptions). Collaborating with commissions of the other German academies and the Austrian academy it prepares editions of the post antique inscriptions of Bavaria up to the middle of the 17th century. All written texts on solid material which do not originate in chancellery or school productions are described, transcribed, translated if necessary and commented on. A great number of indices facilitate the use of the edition. The edition includes inscriptions which still exist and those only known from copies. Besides German Latin is the most common language. The edition tries to establish the text, classify it historically and comment on it as a source of nearly all parts of historical study, the study of languages and many other subjects, last but not least the conservation of monuments. History of single towns and regions is also a very important feature of the corpus.

The project is related to many similar projects in other European countries. In the future a comparative study of European inscriptions is their common aim. By documentation in photo the Commission also contributes to the preservation and documentation of a cultural source which is highly in danger due to the pollution of the environment.
