The task of the project is to collect, edit and publish the documents (diplomas and writs) of Emperor Friedrich II (d.1250) according to the principles of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. This will be the most extensive edition in the diplomatic series, comprising around 2600 charters extant either as originals or in copies; this number excludes the lost documents. The size of the project is twice that of the edition of the documents of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa which has now been completed in Vienna. Its materials are scattered from Malta to Stockholm, from London to Moscow. The edition will contribute to legal and constitutional history, particularly that of Germany – in the sense of the old Empire – Italy and southern France, and also to general history and the history of chancellery and administrative systems in the first half of the 13th century. Since the collection of sources has been largely completed, the first two volumes have now appeared.
