Commission BAdW Forum for Technology
The BAdW Forum for Technology was founded in June 2003 and addressed the public for the first time in April 2004. The statutes define its task as follows: "The Commission organises in the Academy public forums for information and discussion concerning topics both of scientific and of general interest"; accordingly a symposium "Mobile Communications Technology; Facts, Benefits, Fears" was organised in the assembly room of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities at Munich Residence. A second symposium was held in April 2005 on the subject of “Perspectives for the Energy Industry”, attended by about 220 people; in 2006 the topic was "Medical Technology – Opportunities and Barriers" and in 2009 “Navigation”.
With this kind of informative event the Academy fulfils a public task – as laid down in the statutes – which it pursued particularly in the few years following its foundation, when it addressed the practical and technological problems in Bavaria of those days. The BAdW Forum for Technology plans to organise further symposiums on scientific and technological topics of general interest.
By means of these symposiums and similar events the BAdW Forum for Technology wants to
- communicate the basics of technology and applied sciences in a comprehensible fashion
- increase confidence in technology and reduce hostility to technology
- point out the limits of technology make technology comprehensible for customers and users
- advise ministries and members of parliament on technology, when asked to
- improve the understanding of technology among disseminators,such as representatives of the media, high-school students and teachers as well as teachers involved in adult education
The BAdW Forum for Technology conducts these events in cooperation with the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
