Commission for Low Temperature Physics and the Walther Meissner Institute

The Walther Meissner Institute is supervised by the Commission for Low Temperature Physics. It conducts its own research projects and also supplies both Munich universities with liquid helium.

Its field of research is low temperature solid state physics. In the area of fundamental research, work is concentrated on the phenomena of superconductivity and magnetism, ordering phenomena in  orrelated electron systems, and the physics of low-dimensional and mesoscopic systems. Applied research projects involve the development of special methods and procedures in low temperature technology, new superconducting and magneto-electronic devices, and fabrication techniques for nanostructures. In preparing materials, use is made of the most up-to-date methods of thin film technology and single crystal growth in order to produce superconducting and magnetic systems, organic conductors and functional ceramics.
