I or we? The development of values: from childhood to adolescence

  • 05. Mai 2021  |  18:00 Uhr
  • Values can be understood as orienting frames of reference for human action. They have both an individual and a collective dimension. Individuals as well as societies are often confronted with situations in which adherence to different values leads to conflicting consequences. Differently weighting these values is one option for dealing with such conflicts. Values, their relationship among each other, as well as their respective weighting undergo continuous change as do societies at large. In times in which we face challenges like climate change, global migration or the Covid-19 pandemic the relative weight of community-oriented values (“we”) versus self-oriented values (“I”) is of particular importance. Ariel Knafo-Noam is a professor of developmental psychology at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. His research is concerned with factors influencing differences in individuals’ sociability and their values system as a whole. He specifically looks at the development of altruism, empathy, and further aspects of prosocial behavior. He studies how different contexts, cultures, and family constellations shape value development; and he also looks at genetic influences of value development. In his talk, Ariel Knafo-Noam will discuss how his research findings on value development from infancy to adulthood may help to shape and reinforce value-oriented behavior in times of deep crisis.
